Once you’ve been diagnosed with diabetes, your life changes. You simply cannot do what you used to do - you will have to follow a strict regime to ensure your health. Once you’re used to that regime it will be no problem… t he question is getting to that point.
How do you get organized?
1) Arrange your medical care. Decide who you’ll go to and who will compise your healthcare team. You’ll need a doctor, a nurse, and a nutritionist.
Organize your supplies
1) Find an accessible, central location to store everything related to your diabetes care. Organize a shelf or shelves so that you can easily see when you’re running low on supplies or medication.
Organize your day
1) Manage your time. Get your children and spouse to help you now more than ever. Don’t sacrifice your health for their care…because that will shorten your quality of life and eventually they’ll have to take care of you anyway.
What to do when you’re sick?
Colds and flus can affect diabetics worse than non-diabetics. Prepare a sick-day plan (available in the book Every Woman’s Guide to Diabetes).
Prepare for travel
1) Keep a travel bag with all your diabetic supplies
2) Being plenty of snacks
3) If you’re crossing time zones, work out the appropriate times you need for your insulin injections
