There are five rules for healthier eating - given in the book The Complete Guide to Walking.
They are the type of rules that it’s easy for most people to follow - common sense rules that will help you lose weight and maintain your optimum weight.
Here they are:
1. Drink more water all the time.
The standard recommendation is to drink 8 8-oz glasses of water a day.
Soda pop, energy drinks and juices don’t count. Drinks with caffeine, please note, are actually diuretics, which will actually dehydrate you.
3. Eat lots more fruits and vegetables
Think of having fruit and veggies not only for meals, but also for your snacks. Start by keeping a bag of mini-carrots in your fridge, for example.
4. Eat fewer bad fats and more good ones
There are various ways you can do this…
-substitute mustard for mayonaise on sandwiches
-avoid fast-food french fries and onion rings
-nuts and seeds instead of potato chips
5. Get more “functional” foods into your diet
1. oatmeal - high in fiber, famed for reducing heart disease risk
2. broccoli - high in calcium, vitamin C, and beta-carotene - found to reduce both cancer and heart disease risk
3. Tomatoes - full of lycopene, which is found to reduce cancer risk, particularly that of the prostate
and so on
